I know it’s really late to be saying this, but can I say something I love about this brief snippet?
Okay, in this scene, the other four girls find out Miyuki has a crush on someone, and when she says it’s someone they know, they all start chiming in with names of their classmates, asking if he’s the one Miyuki likes. Two boys are mentioned prior to this guy, a cheerful guy with energy and a serious, refined guy, and then we see Munemoto…who is fat. And in the “imagine spot” is eating.
But! He’s fat, but they don’t really mock this. In any other show, and usually in real life, someone would name a fat character as a joke, and everyone would laugh and be “hahaha, no way could she like him!” But that doesn’t happen here. His girth is mentioned, but only in relation to his heart—the girls say he’s a big guy, but that’s because he’s got a huge heart and is really nice. In fact, they specially mention his heart first, then his size.
No one laughs at the idea of Miyuki crushing on a fat guy, it isn’t made into a joke. They’re being serious, and they show a heavier character (one who’s only in the background as an extra, but still) as a person, and specifically say he’s a cool guy. His weight is never brought into the equation as a negative, or a joke, or an obstacle.
And honestly, I think that’s pretty damn cool.
